Many immigrants in Colorado and beyond are fearing mass deportations under President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. These policies include executive orders declaring a national emergency at the southern border, limiting birthright citizenship, and directing ICE to detain and remove undocumented immigrants. Additionally, ICE can now make arrests at sensitive locations, and detain others during arrests for criminal activity. In Colorado, a recent federal investigation led to the detainment of 41 migrants without legal status in Adams County.
Under former President Joe Biden’s administration, foreigners could enter the U.S. through various avenues, such as obtaining visas or seeking asylum at a port of entry. However, Trump limited these options by making the CBP One app nonfunctional on Inauguration Day. This change has left noncitizens with few choices, as securing visas, particularly for Latin Americans, is challenging. Those who enter illegally are now prioritized for expedited removal.
Trump has faced international pushback for his deportation plans, with some countries initially refusing to accept deported migrants. However, some, like Colombia, eventually agreed under pressure of potential tariffs and visa restrictions. Mexico, initially opposed to Trump’s policies, has accepted multiple deportation flights in one day. Overall, Trump’s immigration policies have sparked fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities in Colorado and globally.
