Aurora no longer requires notice or shelter for homeless camp cleanups

The Aurora City Council voted to remove a requirement for law enforcement to give a 72-hour notice before clearing homeless encampments and provide shelter options to those affected. Previously, citations or arrests couldn’t be made without meeting both requirements. The ordinance passed by a 6-3 vote, with some councilmembers expressing concerns about the impact on the homeless population. Councilmember Steve Sundberg argued the change is necessary for public safety, citing the need to clear encampments quickly in certain situations. The decision comes after a Supreme Court ruling that allows communities to take action against unhoused individuals, even without available shelter. The meeting to discuss the ordinance was moved online due to security concerns, leading to the cancellation of the public comments section. Mayor Mike Coffman suggested moving future meetings to a virtual format as well. Councilmember Coombs criticized the cancellation, emphasizing the importance of listening to the community. The decision has sparked controversy and raised questions about the city’s approach to homelessness. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential increase in arrests and the loss of possessions for those impacted by the ordinance. The City of Aurora has been contacted for comment on the matter.
