Press Release: Avalanche Danger Rises in Colorado Backcountry
Colorado, December 27, 2024 – Backcountry adventurers in Colorado are being urged to exercise caution as the state braces for increased avalanche risks this weekend and into early next week. Weather forecasts predict substantial snow accumulations following a period of dry conditions leading up to Christmas.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) has issued an avalanche watch from 5 p.m. on Friday, December 27, through 5 p.m. on Monday, December 30, for several mountain zones. Affected areas include the Park, Elk Head, Rabbit Ears, Gore ranges, and the Flattop Mountains in the north, alongside the West Elks, Ragged, and Ruby ranges in the central region.
Heavy snowfall coupled with strong winds is expected to lead to large natural avalanches and an increased likelihood of human-triggered incidents. In a recent announcement, CAIC officials stated, “Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.” Currently, six mountain zones are rated as ‘Considerable’ for avalanche risk, with eight zones at ‘Moderate’ and three at ‘Low.’ However, these ratings are expected to rise throughout the weekend as new snow layers exacerbate the underlying weak snowpack.
Avalanche incidents have already occurred this winter, with a total of 10 incidents and 13 individuals caught in slides. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities reported this season. CAIC advises backcountry travelers to stay alert for signs of instability, such as cracking or collapsing snow, and to approach mountain excursions with heightened awareness.
