‘Santa Ana Winds Persist, Raising Concerns of Extreme Fire Behavior in California’

Dry vegetation and strong winds have elevated critical fire weather conditions across Southern California, prompting red flag warnings for areas in Los Angeles, Ventura, San Diego, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties. Wind gusts up to 75 mph are predicted, increasing the risk of extreme fire behavior and rapid fire growth. Fire crews in San Diego County have responded to small brush fires, with the largest, the Lilac Fire, burning 85 acres and being 50% contained. In Los Angeles County, progress has been made against the Palisades and Eaton fires, which have destroyed more than 15,000 structures and killed at least 28 people.

Rain is expected in Southern California over the weekend, providing relief for firefighters but also bringing potential hazards. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has issued an executive order to protect burn areas from toxic runoff. The Clay Fire in Riverside County has been contained, and the Palisades and Eaton fires are nearing containment as well. At least 28 people have been killed in the two fires.

Overall, fire crews are working diligently to establish control lines, extinguish hot spots, repair infrastructure, and address hazards to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and follow evacuation orders as necessary to prevent any further loss of life and property.
