Extreme Cold Weather Advisory for Colorado: Hazardous Conditions Expected Through Tuesday
Colorado is bracing for a significant cold snap, prompting officials to issue First Alert Weather Days from Saturday through Tuesday morning. The alert warns of dangerously low temperatures and snow, with Winter Weather Advisories currently in effect for Denver and the entire I-25 corridor.
The upcoming weekend will see daytime temperatures barely breaking into the teens, accompanied by scattered light snow showers. Residents can expect an additional 1-4 inches of snow accumulation in areas west of I-25, while 1-2 inches may accumulate on the east side. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate, particularly on the I-70 and I-25 corridors.
As temperatures plummet, a Cold Weather Advisory is set to be in effect from midnight until 9 AM on Tuesday, forecasting temperatures between 10 degrees above zero and 10 degrees below, with wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero—particularly affecting the Denver metro area. Such dangerously low wind chills pose a significant risk of frostbite for exposed skin in just 30 minutes. Residents are advised to dress in layers, including hats and gloves, and limit outdoor exposure.
A surge of frigid air and snow is predicted to arrive Sunday night, and while Sunday may see a brief high of 15 degrees, wind chill values will drop to -15 degrees. The low on Sunday night is expected to be -5 degrees, and Monday’s high will remain in the single digits, with potential additional snowfall of 1-3 inches in the Denver area.
Monday morning will be the coldest, with temperatures plunging to -11 degrees. Fortunately, the Arctic chill is expected to dissipate by Tuesday, allowing temperatures to rise above freezing by midday.
