Dozens Killed in Kazakhstan Plane Crash: Azerbaijani Airliner Meets Tragedy

A tragic plane crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan, has claimed the lives of 38 individuals aboard an Azerbaijani airliner, while 29 others have survived. The Embraer 190 aircraft, carrying a total of 67 occupants including 62 passengers and five crew members, was attempting an emergency landing about two miles away from the airport.

Initial investigations suggest that the aircraft, en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, experienced a bird strike that caused significant issues, leading the pilots to divert to Aktau amid worsening weather conditions. Both pilots are reported to have died in the incident. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families and declared December 26 a day of mourning in Azerbaijan.

Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbaev provided updates on the crash during meetings with Azerbaijani officials, as emergency crews worked diligently at the crash site. The number of survivors has varied through reports, but the latest indicates that 29 individuals escaped the wreckage. Footage from the scene showed the plane making a steep descent, ultimately crashing and erupting into flames.

Kazakh authorities have launched an investigation into the possible causes of the disaster, including technical malfunctions. Reports also emerged of "strong GPS jamming" affecting the flight’s navigation data prior to the crash. In light of the tragedy, Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights between Baku and Grozny and is cooperating with authorities on the investigation.

As the investigation continues, the international community watches closely, offering support and condolences to those affected by this devastating event.
