Colombian businessman Alex Saab has been appointed as the new industry minister in Venezuela by President Nicolas Maduro, following a cabinet change after a contested election. Saab, a close ally of Maduro who was released in a prisoner exchange with the US last year, will replace Pedro Tellechea in the position, who resigned due to health reasons.
Maduro announced the appointment on Friday, stating that Saab would help implement a new economic model to develop Venezuela’s industrial system. Saab was returned to Venezuela in December 2023 as part of an exchange for US prisoners, signaling a thaw in tensions between Washington and Caracas.
The contested election in July, which saw Maduro claim victory despite opposition and international skepticism, has led to a crackdown on dissent in Venezuela. Election oversight groups, human rights organizations, and regional leaders have all questioned the validity of Maduro’s win, but the government has not provided evidence to support its claims.
Saab’s appointment comes amidst ongoing political turmoil in Venezuela, with Maduro facing criticism and widespread opposition for his handling of the election and subsequent crackdown on dissent. The new industry minister will be tasked with implementing economic reforms in the country, as Maduro seeks to strengthen Venezuela’s industrial sector under his leadership.
