During a presidential debate, former President Donald Trump openly embraced the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol, referring to the rioters as “we.” He expressed sympathy for those involved, stating they had been treated poorly. Trump criticized the death of Ashley Babbit during the insurrection, blaming an “out of control police officer” for the incident. Despite the officer being cleared of wrongdoing, Trump refused to accept any responsibility for his role in inciting the violence.
Trump also continued spreading falsehoods about the 2020 election, falsely claiming he had won and suggesting that the election was fraudulent. He expressed a lack of willingness to accept the results of the 2024 election if they do not favor him. Additionally, Trump maintained his anti-immigrant stance, making derogatory comments about illegal immigrants and making baseless claims that they are voting in American elections without being able to speak English or understand the country they are in.
The debate also included Trump attempting to shift blame onto Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for the lack of security during the Capitol insurrection. Overall, Trump’s statements during the debate continued to perpetuate lies and conspiracy theories, demonstrating a refusal to accept reality and a readiness to sow division and disinformation.
