Denver Council votes to begin collecting sidewalk fees in January

The Denver City Council has approved significant changes to the sidewalk repair and construction program, moving away from annual fees based on lot size to a mostly flat rate that charges larger properties extra money. The council voted 13-0 in favor of the changes, but noted that the process of implementing these changes and acquiring property for sidewalk widening will take years.

Councilman Kevin Flynn, who opposed the 2022 ballot measure but was part of the task force that developed the program changes, expressed anticipation for the implementation phase, acknowledging the challenges ahead.

This decision marks a shift in how Denverites will be billed for city-led sidewalk repairs and construction, with a focus on making the process more equitable and efficient. While the initial approval has been granted, there is still much work to be done in the coming years to fully realize these changes.
