Denver City Council Approves Proclamation for Civic Center Station Renaming and Affordable Housing Loan

In a landmark decision, the Denver City Council unanimously approved a proclamation on Monday endorsing the renaming of Civic Center Station after Wade Blank, a prominent Presbyterian minister and disability activist. This decision signifies the city’s commitment not only to honor Blank’s legacy but also to acknowledge his role in advocating for inclusive transit access. "Today’s proclamation renaming Civic Center Station to Wade Blank Civic Center Station is about more than just changing a name," stated District 10 Councilmember Chris Hinds. He emphasized that this renaming celebrates "a legacy of courage, action, and unwavering commitment to inclusion."

The proclamation will support the formal process with the Regional Transportation District (RTD) to officially rename the station. RTD Board Executive Director Jack Kroll noted the importance of community support in such decisions, and the review committee is expected to begin its work shortly.

Alongside the naming initiative, the Council also sanctioned a $3.1 million loan to support the Chrysalis Apartments project, aimed at delivering 70 new income-restricted housing units in Denver. This loan agreement is with The Empowerment Program, Inc., with a 60-year term for the development of affordable housing on the site of the former Bainbridge Apartments. The project will serve former homeless individuals, offering essential services like mental health support and transportation assistance. The innovative endeavor addresses the city’s growing need for affordable housing while adhering to a covenant that ensures long-term support for low-to-moderate-income residents.

These initiatives reflect Denver’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse community, making strides towards both social justice and affordable housing solutions.
