Parent group petitions for injunction to prevent school closures and consolidations by DPS

A group of Denver Public Schools parents, represented by Mamás De DPS LLC, have filed a motion seeking a preliminary injunction to overturn the school board’s decision to close seven schools and cut grades at three others due to declining enrollment. The group argues that the district mismanaged funds and failed to engage the community in the decision-making process. The lawsuit claims that the closure of these schools would cause irreparable harm to the community.

DPS Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero recommended the closure of five elementary schools and two secondary schools, as well as restructuring grade levels at three others. The affected parents are concerned about the impact of these closures on their children and the community. Nick Miller, a father of three, expressed his worry about the closure of Palmer Elementary and the impact it would have on his family.

While the spokesperson for DPS declined to comment on the pending litigation, the parents involved in the lawsuit are hopeful that the judge will grant the preliminary injunction, allowing the affected children to continue attending their schools. This legal battle highlights the ongoing tensions between the school district and the community over decisions related to school closures and consolidations. The parents are seeking transparency, accountability, and community engagement in the decision-making process to ensure the best outcomes for their children and the community.
