Denver International Airport Welcomes First Airbus A380 Flight to Munich
Denver, CO – On Wednesday, Denver International Airport (DEN) celebrated a significant achievement with the arrival of its inaugural Airbus A380 flight, operated by Lufthansa German Airlines, to Munich Airport. This milestone marks the first scheduled A380 service in the airport’s history.
Beginning April 30 and running through September 30, Lufthansa will operate daily flights between Denver and Munich. The direct flight offers a travel time of approximately 10.5 hours and showcases the A380’s impressive capacity, featuring 509 seats—a nearly 75% increase compared to the originally scheduled Airbus A350-900, which has 293 seats.
Denver’s extensive 16,000-foot runway, the longest commercial service runway in the U.S., enables safe operations of the A380. The aircraft will primarily operate from Gate A41 on Concourse A, enhancing passenger travel options significantly.
Notable figures in attendance included Consul General of Germany Andrea Sasse, Munich Airport President and CEO Jost Lammers, Lufthansa’s VP of Passenger Sales for the Americas Dirk Janzen, and Phil Washington, CEO of Denver International Airport. Together, they commemorated the occasion with a gate event and ribbon-cutting ceremony. This collaboration highlights a longstanding partnership between Denver and Munich; the two airports signed a sister airport agreement in 1991, with Lufthansa conducting nonstop flights since May 2016.
Phil Washington emphasized the significance of Lufthansa’s investment in Denver, stating, “We look forward to supporting them as they operate the world’s largest aircraft at DEN.” This development not only increases capacity for passengers but also fortifies Denver’s position as a key hub for international travel.
