Labour Accuses Tories of ‘Gifting’ Victory to Reform; Badenoch Claims Poor Election Outcome Won’t Reflect Her Unpopularity – UK Politics Live | Politics

Labour Accuses Tories of ‘Gifting’ Election to Reform UK Amid Local Election Preparations

As local elections in England approach, Labour is accusing the Conservative Party of neglect, suggesting they are "gifting" votes to Reform UK. The statement comes two days before elections, coinciding with the government’s announcement to change asylum laws regarding sex offenders.

Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, downplayed concerns about potential losses, asserting that a poor outcome would not reflect her popularity. In a BBC interview, she stated, “It’s going to take time to rebuild public trust” after last year’s historic defeat. Badenoch acknowledged that recovery could take years, referencing the lengthy comeback journeys of previous opposition parties.

In Runcorn and Helsby, a by-election slated for Thursday further complicates the landscape. Labour’s previous majority in this constituency stands at nearly 15,000 votes, setting the stage for heightened scrutiny. With many local councils counting votes on Friday, the narrative following the Runcorn result may significantly influence the overall election commentary.

Labour’s Ellie Reeves expressed her party’s perception that Conservatives are effectively conceding Runcorn to Reform UK, claiming, “They’re not doing any work on the ground at all.” Reeves’ assertion follows comments from Tory MP Esther McVey, suggesting the party might prioritize resources elsewhere.

In the broader electoral agenda, Labour leader Keir Starmer will chair cabinet meetings while also focusing campaign efforts. Meanwhile, figures such as Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage are actively participating in their respective campaigns throughout England.

With an anticipated 500 losses for the Conservatives and Labour seeking to consolidate their position, the upcoming elections promise to be notably revealing of the political landscape in the UK.
