Discovering Panama: A Journey Through Birdwatching and Biodiversity
Panama City, Panama – This past December, amidst the rich biodiversity lining the Panama Canal, my family and I embarked on an unforgettable birdwatching adventure. Guided by Nando, an adept local ornithologist, we ventured deep into the rainforest, where the calls of exotic birds echoed around us.
As we traversed the verdant trails, Nando demonstrated the seemingly magical connection between him and a plump streak-chested antpitta. “This is the same bird I’ve been calling for years,” he remarked, highlighting the bond formed through years of dedication. This moment encapsulated the essence of our weeklong trip in Panama, a country burgeoning with ecotourism beneath the hot, humid canopy.
Our journey began in Panama City, where the vibrancy of its colonial past shines through quaint renovated hotels and lively jazz bars. A short drive took us to the Canal Zone, where Nando astutely guided us through lush landscapes, unveiling over 55 bird species by morning. We marveled at the kaleidoscope of wildlife, from electric blue morpho butterflies to howler monkeys, revealing the intricate dynamics of this remarkable ecosystem.
We also explored El Valle de Antón, a picturesque town laced with stunning gardens and charming cafes, reminiscent of a tropical fairy tale. Here, we stayed at the Canopy Lodge, a haven for bird enthusiasts, where meals were accompanied by feathered visitors drawn to the lodge’s feeding stations.
Finally, we reached Isla Palenque, a luxurious resort where wildlife encounters continued. One standout moment was spotting a spectacled owl, a testament to the attentive guidance we received throughout our journey.
Panama’s unmatched biodiversity and rich cultural heritage make it a must-visit for travelers looking to connect with nature and experience the warmth of its communities.
