Ex-LaSalle Officer Sentenced to Prison for Fatal Shooting of Man

Former LaSalle Police Officer Sentenced to Six Years for Manslaughter

GREELEY, Colo. — Erik Hernandez, a former LaSalle police officer, was sentenced on Friday to six years in the Colorado Department of Corrections after being convicted of manslaughter. This follows the 2023 shooting death of Juston Reffel, which occurred in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store.

The incident unfolded on May 3, 2023, when Hernandez responded to a report about a suspicious vehicle. According to reports, Hernandez and another officer parked their patrol unit near the suspicious vehicle and entered the store to locate its driver. After exiting the store, Hernandez encountered Reffel, who had placed his vehicle in reverse and attempted to leave the parking spot. In response, Hernandez fired four shots, fatally striking Reffel in the torso. The victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Initially indicted on a charge of second-degree murder, Hernandez ultimately accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. The court’s decision reflects a significant and tragic case that raised questions about police conduct and the use of lethal force.

Hernandez’s sentencing highlights the ongoing discussions surrounding law enforcement accountability and the importance of ensuring public safety during police operations. Community members and officials are expected to continue advocating for responsible policing practices in light of this case.

As Colorado grapples with issues surrounding police use of force, the outcome of this trial serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that can arise from law enforcement actions.
