Herb Alpert discusses fame, TikTok, and reaching 90 with the Tijuana Brass

Legendary trumpeter Herb Alpert recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a milestone performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center, marking his return to the Tijuana Brass group format for the first time in 40 years. The performance coincided with the 60th anniversary of his landmark album “Whipped Cream & Other Delights,” which became a chart-topping success in 1965. Alpert’s distinctive brass sound dominated the 1960s music landscape, appearing in various media and outselling major artists like The Beatles and Frank Sinatra.

Despite facing personal challenges and a career-threatening crisis with his instrument in 1969, Alpert found a breakthrough and went on to co-found A&M Records with Jerry Moss. Their partnership, based on a handshake agreement, lasted nearly three decades and remains a source of emotion for Alpert. Now touring with a newly assembled Tijuana Brass, he finds that the music feels fresh and continues to perform with his wife of 52 years, singer Lani Hall.

Reflecting on his career and music, Alpert describes his approach as authentic and rooted in the present moment. His classic hit “Ladyfingers” has recently seen a resurgence on TikTok, showcasing the enduring appeal of his music. Alpert’s ability to connect with audiences across generations highlights his lasting impact on the music industry and his commitment to creating timeless music.
