Construction Completion Date for the Opening of Colorado Highway 82 Independence Pass | Transportation

Independence Pass over Colorado Highway 82 is set to open as early as next Monday, marking the highway’s earliest opening on record. The Colorado Department of Transportation plans to begin a resurfacing and bridge update project on the east side of the pass on that day. The decision to open early is due to above-average temperatures and below average snowpack levels in the Gunnison and Arkansas river basins during winter 2024-25.

The project will improve approximately seven miles of CO 82, including milling old asphalt, paving with new asphalt, guardrail replacement, and bridge rehabilitation. The work is scheduled to take place Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 7 a.m. to noon, with traffic impacts including 20-minute delays, a speed reduction, and one-lane alternating traffic.

The completion of the project is expected in October. The new guardrail will be 31 inches high, meeting safety standard requirements and improving highway safety for the traveling public. Further project updates can be found on the CDOT website, and questions can be directed to CDOT at 970-986-6288 or emailed to resurfacingproject@gmail.com. This early opening is a welcome change for travelers who typically have to wait until Memorial Day for the pass to open.
