City Leaders in Denver Visit Proposed MLS Stadium Location for NWSL Team

Denver city leaders recently toured the proposed site for the National Women’s Soccer League stadium in the Mile High City. The estimated cost of the stadium is $70 million, with a total project cost of $150-200 million. The stadium would also include mixed-use development with affordable housing and a new community park. Improving connectivity to southwest Denver neighborhoods is a priority in the proposal.

The tour provided city officials with a visual understanding of the site, located at the Santa Fe Yards stadium site. The site overlooks the South Platte River, which has been a challenge for the community in terms of access and connectivity. District 7 Councilmember Flor Alvidrez facilitated the tour, addressing concerns from the City Council about the financial investment.

Denver’s Southwest Area Plan aims to incorporate community needs into the decision-making process and create a long-term vision for the area. The proposed stadium and surrounding development are estimated to have up to $2.2 billion in economic impact over 30 years. The site, once home to the old Gates Rubber Factory, has seen failed redevelopment efforts in the past, including a bid for Amazon’s second headquarters.

With the proximity to the light rail station, city leaders believe this development opportunity is significant for Denver’s growth. The South Platte River Committee will decide whether to move the plan forward to the full council for consideration on April 23rd. Residents are invited to give input at an open house on April 26th to shape the future development of southwest Denver.
