New charges filed against accused Washington Park shooter following jail incident, Denver victim recovers and starts eating solid foods again

Ryan Egelston, who is accused of shooting at two individuals in Washington Park in Denver on Feb. 2, is now facing additional charges following a jailhouse altercation. Egelston, 28, has been charged with assault and disturbing the peace after an incident at the Van-Cise Simonet Detention Center on April 6. This comes in addition to the attempted murder charges he already faces related to the shooting in the park.

During the Washington Park incident, Egelston allegedly fired a gun at a man with whom he was arguing, resulting in bystander Ben Varga being shot in the back of the head and chin. Varga suffered fractured vertebrae but is now on the road to recovery. Since the incident, he has lost weight but is regaining his strength and has been able to eat solid food again.

Varga shared that he is feeling good and is looking forward to resuming normal activities like going to concerts and the gym. He still has some lingering reminders of the shooting, but is optimistic about the future. He is preparing for another surgery in May but hopes to have his neck brace removed soon. Despite the trauma, Varga plans to return to Washington Park to move past the negative memories associated with the incident.
