Updates on MLS’s Possible Switch to a European Calendar

MLS owners have discussed potential changes to the league’s calendar and competition format, including the regular season and playoffs, during a recent meeting. League commissioner Don Garber called these potential changes one of the biggest decisions in league history. While no decision was made during the meeting, discussions will continue with hopes of implementing changes by the 2027 season at the earliest.

The proposed changes include moving to an international calendar, altering competition formats, and potentially changing roster rules and regulations. LAFC owner Larry Berg expressed optimism that progress was being made towards a decision on these changes, which will be discussed with corporate partners and the MLS Players Association.

While a move to a fall-spring calendar after the 2026 World Cup was initially considered, the decision has been pushed back to at least the 2027 season. The league sees the World Cup as a catalyst for potential changes, but emphasizes that it was never a hard deadline. The board of governors will convene at the MLS All-Star Game in July to continue discussions.

Overall, the league is focused on evolving to provide more value for fans and the marketplace. While the potential changes are significant, the league is taking a cautious approach to ensure all factors are considered before any decisions are made.
