U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet is planning to announce his candidacy for Colorado governor, potentially succeeding Gov. Jared Polis in the 2026 election. Bennet, a Democrat, has a long history in Colorado politics and has been rumored for weeks to be exploring a run for governor. His announcement is expected on Friday morning. If successful, Bennet would bring his experience from serving in Washington, D.C., since 2009 to lead the state.
Currently, Attorney General Phil Weiser is the only other Democrat who has officially announced his candidacy for governor and has wasted no time criticizing Bennet as a potential rival. Weiser emphasized his experience as the “People’s Lawyer” working in Colorado while Bennet was in Washington, stating that he is the fighter Colorado needs as governor.
On the Republican side, three candidates have filed for the governor’s race: state Sen. Mark Baisley, state Rep. Scott Bottoms, and Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell. Colorado has not elected a Republican governor since 2002.
Bennet’s potential run for governor could set off political reshuffling, opening up a Senate seat that could see major Democratic candidates vying for the position. With his strong name recognition and support, Bennet’s candidacy is expected to help clear the field for other Democratic contenders.
