Colorado Democrat Michael Bennet is expected to announce his run for governor in the upcoming election. Bennet, the state’s senior U.S. senator, is scheduled to make the announcement at Denver’s City Park on Friday morning. Bennet had previously hinted at the possibility of running for governor, citing the need for strong leadership in Colorado to address economic issues.
Bennet, who has served as a senator since 2009 after being appointed to fill a vacancy, has won election to full terms three times. He also ran for president in 2020, focusing on his proposal to expand the child tax credit. If he joins the gubernatorial race, Bennet will face a primary against state Attorney General Phil Weiser, who has already raised significant funds for his campaign.
Since Bennet’s potential bid for governor became known, other Democrats who were considering running, such as U.S. Reps. Joe Neguse and Jason Crow, have decided against it. On the Republican side, nearly a dozen candidates have filed paperwork to run for governor, including state Sen. Mark Baisley, state Rep. Scott Bottoms, Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, and former congressional candidate Joshua Griffin.
The announcement of Bennet’s candidacy comes as current Democratic Governor Jared Polis will be term-limited after the 2026 election. Bennet’s decision to run for governor is seen as a move to focus on state-level issues and make a difference in Colorado’s economy and leadership.
