The E. coli outbreak linked to raw onions on McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers has worsened, with the number of people hospitalized doubling to over 75 cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that individuals aged 13 to 88 in 13 states have fallen ill, with one person developing the serious condition hemolytic uremic syndrome. Cases have now spread to states like Michigan, Washington, and Oregon, indicating a wider geographical impact.
Tragically, one person in Colorado has died from the outbreak. Health officials believe the risk to consumers has decreased due to the recall of onions in affected states and precautionary measures taken by other fast-food chains such as Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Burger King, who have stopped offering onions in their menu items. The most recent illness reported was on Oct. 10, but more cases may surface due to the delayed nature of outbreak detection.
The outbreak began when the CDC issued a food safety alert and McDonald’s removed Quarter Pounders from 10 states.
