Bears waking up from hibernation in Evergreen, one of them damages a car

A bear in Evergreen, Colorado, recently emerged from hibernation and destroyed a car in search of food. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials emphasized the importance of locking up cars and removing items that may attract bears in bear country. The bear was able to get into the car but needed assistance to get out. This incident serves as a reminder of the increasing encounters between bears and human property in Colorado, with data showing over 5,000 reports of bear-related incidents in 2024.

CPW provided recommendations for bear-proofing homes, cars, campsites, and protecting livestock. Measures include keeping garbage in secure locations, cleaning garbage cans regularly, using bear-resistant trash cans, and not leaving food outside. Additionally, securing compost piles, cleaning grills, and not allowing fruit to rot on the ground are important steps in bear-proofing. It is also advised to lock car doors, keep windows closed, and secure food in vehicles when camping.

For livestock, keeping them in covered enclosures at night, constructing electric fencing, and minimizing animal odors are essential. If encountering a bear causing issues in an urban area, individuals are encouraged to contact their local CPW office. Overall, being Bear Aware, educating neighbors and children, and following guidelines to prevent bear encounters are crucial in reducing conflicts between bears and humans in Colorado. By taking these precautions, individuals can contribute to protecting both wildlife and property.
