Jena Griswold, the Colorado secretary of state and a Democrat, has announced her candidacy for attorney general in next year’s election. In her first 24 hours as a candidate, she raised over $185,000, setting a record for single-day donations in Colorado’s campaign finance history. Griswold joins the Democratic primary alongside Michael Dougherty and Crisanta Duran, with the current officeholder, Phil Weiser, being term-limited and running for governor.
Griswold’s campaign received 869 contributions, with an average donation of $212. She announced endorsements from over 100 current and former Colorado elected officials, unions, and community figures. However, Colorado Republican Party Chairwoman Brita Horn criticized Griswold’s candidacy, citing her involvement in a lawsuit that attempted to keep Donald Trump off the state’s ballot last year.
Despite the criticism, Griswold remains focused on her plans to take on Trump, protect rights and freedoms, and preserve the Colorado way of life. Her initial campaign finance report is due on July 15, as she entered the race after the first fundraising quarter. Griswold’s impressive fundraising numbers show strong support for her candidacy and indicate a competitive race in next year’s election.
