Community meeting scheduled to discuss oil and gas “containment loss” incident in Northern Colorado

A recent oil and gas “containment loss” incident at the Bishop well site in Northern Colorado has caused families to evacuate their homes and closed a school for several days. In response, a community meeting has been organized for residents of Galeton, where the incident occurred. Representatives from the Galeton Fire Department, Weld County Office of Emergency Management, and Chevron will be present to address concerns and provide updates on the situation.

The incident, which led to the evacuation of residents within a half-mile radius of the oil and gas facility, occurred on Sunday evening. A person described as a “business partner employee” was injured in the incident and taken to a medical facility. As a precaution, Galeton Elementary School was closed for several days due to its proximity to the evacuation zone.

Weld County officials have been monitoring air quality in and around the well pad and evacuation zone and have determined that levels remain below those of concern for public health. Equipment removal from the site is ongoing, with crews working to halt the release of the containment loss. Residents with livestock are advised to contact their veterinarians for evaluation and monitoring.

The community meeting, scheduled for Thursday, April 10, will provide residents with an opportunity to get updates on the situation and ask questions. The safety and security of the community, workers, and environment remain a top priority for officials involved in the response efforts.
