Trump administration dismisses admiral as part of continued removal of high-ranking military officers

President Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth have fired several top military officials, including Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, who was the U.S. military’s representative to NATO. The Pentagon has not provided an explanation for these dismissals, which also include Air Force Gen. Timothy Haugh and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, who was outspoken about racial reconciliation.

Sen. Jack Reed has criticized the firings as “disgraceful” and called out his Republican colleagues for not speaking out against them. The Trump administration has also fired two other female admirals, the commandant of the Coast Guard, Linda Fagan, and the Chief of Naval Operations, Lisa Franchetti. The administration has directed a task force to eliminate Biden-era diversity programs in the military, with Hegseth stating that diversity efforts divide rather than unite the military.

Hegseth believes that unity, rather than diversity, is the strength of the military. However, about 32% of the Pentagon’s 1.2 million troops on active duty identify with a racial minority group, and over 17% are women. These dismissals have raised concerns about the impact on the military’s leadership and effectiveness, as experienced combat leaders are being removed without explanation. The situation has sparked debate and criticism within the military and political spheres.
