President Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth have fired several top military officials, including Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, who was the U.S. military’s representative to NATO. Hegseth believes that unity, rather than diversity, is the strength of the military. However, about 32% of the Pentagon’s 1.2 million troops on active duty identify with a racial minority group, and over 17% are women. These dismissals have raised concerns about the impact on the military’s leadership and effectiveness, as experienced combat leaders are being removed without explanation.
