Expunge Colorado, a non-profit organization based in Denver, is hosting a fundraiser to raise funds for their pro bono legal services for record sealing. The organization, led by women BIPOC, has been providing free record sealing clinics since 2018. They help Coloradans facing barriers due to previous cannabis convictions, misdemeanors, and petty thefts through petition-based record sealing and the automated process under the Colorado Clean Slate law.
Melanie Rose Rodgers, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Expunge Colorado, emphasized the importance of record sealing in removing barriers to job opportunities, housing, and financial aid. Many individuals cannot afford legal representation for record sealing, as quoted prices can reach up to $5,000. Expunge Colorado relies on grassroots fundraising, grants, and donations to offer free legal services to those in need.
The organization’s upcoming fundraising event, “Serving Up Justice,” will take place at Ace Eat Serve in Denver. The event aims to secure additional funding to expand the reach of their services and help more individuals with record sealing. Through their efforts, Expunge Colorado hopes to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by past criminal convictions, empowering them to pursue employment and housing opportunities without the burden of a public criminal record. Ticket information for the fundraiser is available on their website.
