Denver mayor and aides caught using auto-deleting encryption app to discuss illegal immigration

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and his administration used an encrypted messaging app that automatically deleted messages to communicate about the city’s illegal immigration crisis, a practice that experts say violated records retention policies and open meeting laws. The app, Signal, was used by Johnston and 14 advisers as part of a group called “Strike Force.”

A spokesperson for the mayor defended the use of the app, saying it was prompted by concerns about the impact of the Trump administration on Denver. The group is used to share relevant updates impacting the city.

However, First Amendment lawyer Steven Zansberg pointed out that the use of the app violated state laws, as it allowed for the instant destruction of communications between group members outside of city government. The use of such messaging apps undermines the Colorado Open Records Act, which aims to ensure access to government records.

The revelation of the use of the app comes amid concerns about transparency in government. Colorado lawmakers have passed laws limiting access to public records and discussions behind closed doors, prompting criticism about lack of accountability.

The practice of using auto-deleting apps among elected officials is not new, with previous cases where leaders used such apps to discuss public business in private. The use of Signal in this way raised concerns about lack of transparency and accountability in government proceedings.

The issue highlights the ongoing debate over government transparency and the need for officials to be held accountable for their actions. As the use of encrypted messaging apps becomes more prevalent among public officials, the need for laws to ensure openness and accountability in government becomes increasingly important.
