Grants from a Colorado city boost small businesses’ employee pipeline

Footers, a catering business in Arvada, is participating in a work-based learning program in collaboration with the city that aims to provide opportunities for young interns and apprentices to enter the workforce. Austin Jarvis, a former high school student, found his passion for cooking through this program and is now a full-time employee at Footers. The program, funded by the city, provides resources such as certifications and online courses to help young adults develop skills needed for the culinary industry.

Thach Tran, Footers executive chef, sees the program as a way to nurture talent and create a pipeline for young adults entering the workforce. Cami Welch, president of the Arvada Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes the importance of on-the-job training and resources provided by the program. Over $400,000 has already been disbursed to 47 different businesses, with the hope of continuing the program and providing more opportunities in the future.

Jarvis, who once struggled to find his direction, credits the program for helping him discover his passion for cooking. He is now thriving in his role at Footers and serves as a model for others trying to break into the job market. With the success of the program, the city of Arvada aims to continue supporting businesses and young adults in their career development.
