Appointments to Parks and Wildlife Commission Approved by Colorado Senate

The Colorado Senate approved four appointments to the state Parks and Wildlife Commission made by Gov. Jared Polis, but not without opposition. The issue of wolves took center stage during the confirmation process. James Tuchton’s reappointment drew the most fire due to his ties to nonprofits promoting conservation and “non-consumptive” wildlife use. Critics questioned his independence, ties to the governor’s office, and past comments. Tuchton’s appointment was confirmed on a 21-13 vote, with two Democrats and Republicans opposing.

During the confirmation process, concerns were also raised about the other nominees, including Tai Jacober, who faced criticism for voting against a petition regarding wolves. The commission’s handling of the wolf issue has been a significant point of contention. Commission Chair Dallas May defended the new definition of “chronic depredation” and the role of agriculture producers impacted by wolves.

Murphy Robinson, the first Black sportsperson appointee to the commission, emphasized the importance of parks, wildlife, and agriculture in Colorado’s economic development. He highlighted the need for empathy and mitigation of issues related to wolf reintroduction. Commission members also discussed the challenges faced by CPW staff and livestock producers in addressing conflicts with wolves. Overall, the confirmation process highlighted the importance of balancing conservation efforts with the concerns of various stakeholders in Colorado’s natural resources management.
