Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made controversial statements during a national holiday speech, vowing to rid his country of those he claims work for foreign powers and comparing them to insects. He has accused Brussels and the European Union of trying to take away the freedom of Hungarians, likening the situation to past imperial rule. Additionally, Orban has targeted media outlets and organizations funded from abroad, claiming they are part of a global “shadow army” that must be eliminated.
Orban has accelerated efforts to crack down on critics and civil society, following the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump, whom he considers an ally. He has praised the dismantling of the US Agency for International Development, alleging it funds liberal causes aimed at undermining his government. The Hungarian leader has also proposed constitutional amendments to suspend citizenship and deport dual citizens threatening national security, as well as to ban the LGBTQ+ community’s annual Pride carnival.
Orban has stirred controversy by echoing conspiratorial theories, including the “great replacement theory” regarding white people and criticizing support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. He has called for a poll to allow Hungarians to decide whether Kyiv should gain EU membership. The prime minister’s rhetoric has raised concerns about the erosion of democratic norms and human rights in Hungary under his leadership.
