Fugitive prisoner who went missing in 1987 apprehended in Florida

Jorge Milla-Valdes, a 63-year-old Puerto Rican prisoner who escaped from a prison in Puerto Rico in 1987, was captured in Florida under the alias Luis Aguirre. The Puerto Rico Department of Justice contacted the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, suspecting Milla-Valdes was hiding under the name Luis Aguirre, who had a criminal history in Monroe County. After obtaining Milla-Valdes’ fingerprints from Puerto Rico and matching them with his criminal history in Monroe County, authorities confirmed that Aguirre and Milla-Valdes were the same person. Milla-Valdes was found and taken into custody in Fort Myers Shores. He remains in custody on a $10,000 bond, facing an out-of-county warrant and has obtained a court-appointed public defender. Sheriff Carmine Marceno commended the hard work of his Fugitive Warrants Unit and Latent Fingerprints Supervisor Tina Carver for making a positive fingerprint identification within minutes of the arrest. Milla-Valdes’ next court appearance was not listed online as of Thursday. The USA TODAY has reached out to Milla-Valdes’ attorney for comment.
