U.S. Senator Michael Bennet is strongly considering running for Colorado governor in the upcoming election, according to two of his top aides. Bennet, who has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration, believes he can make a bigger impact as governor than as a senator. Democratic Governor Jared Polis is term-limited, opening up the race for a new leader.
Bennet was appointed to the Senate in 2009 and has since been re-elected three times. The race to succeed Polis has been relatively slow to take shape, with Attorney General Phil Weiser being the only Democrat to officially launch a campaign so far. Other potential Democratic contenders include U.S. Reps. Joe Neguse and Jason Crow, as well as Secretary of State Jena Griswold. Former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and Senator Ken Salazar has also expressed interest in potentially running for governor.
On the Republican side, state Rep. Scott Bottoms is the only major candidate to have declared, with others such as state Sens. Barb Kirkmeyer and Mark Baisley, as well as former University of Colorado Regent Heidi Ganahl, also being considered as potential candidates. The race for Colorado governor is expected to be highly competitive, with Bennet’s potential entry adding more intrigue to the upcoming election.
