Former Colorado House Speaker Crisanta Duran has announced her candidacy for the 2026 race to become the state’s next attorney general. A Democrat and four-term state legislator, Duran aims to succeed outgoing Attorney General Phil Weiser, who is term-limited and running for governor.
Duran, a Colorado native, earned her law degree from the University of Colorado and has a background working for a Colorado Supreme Court justice and as political director for Mark Udall. She served as the House’s majority leader before becoming the first Latina speaker in her final term.
In her statement announcing her candidacy, Duran expressed her concerns about the future of the country and emphasized her commitment to protecting consumers, increasing affordability, combating corruption, and standing up against greed.
Duran’s announcement comes shortly after Boulder County District Attorney Michael Daugherty, also a Democrat, entered the AG’s race. They, along with any other Democratic candidates, will face off in a primary in June 2026, with no Republican candidate currently in the running.
As the race for Colorado’s next attorney general heats up, Duran’s entry into the field adds another dynamic to the upcoming election. Stay informed on the latest developments in Colorado politics by signing up for the weekly newsletter from Colorado Politics, The Spot.
