Former Colorado House Speaker Crisanta Duran, a Democrat, has announced her candidacy for attorney general in the upcoming election. Duran, a sixth-generation Coloradan and the first Latina to lead the state’s General Assembly, is committed to ensuring the safety, health, and economic security of all Coloradans. She plans to protect consumers, increase affordability, combat corruption, and stand up against greed. Duran, who served as House speaker from 2017 to 2019, believes her experience as an attorney and in public service has prepared her for the challenges ahead.
Duran’s priorities include protecting the state’s natural resources, creating a safe and secure Colorado, and seeking fairer and more just outcomes. She is the second Democrat to enter the race, joining Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty. Other Democrats interested in the race include 17th Judicial District Attorney Brian Mason and David Seligman, executive director of Towards Justice.
The primary election is expected to become more crowded in the coming months, with no Republican candidates emerging as of now. Incumbent Attorney General Phil Weiser is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor. Duran, who briefly challenged Democratic U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette in the past, brings a wealth of experience in public service to the role of attorney general. Raised in Northglenn and Arvada, Duran has received numerous awards and honors for her work in politics and advocacy. The primary election is scheduled for June 30, 2026, with state GOP leaders opting out of the statewide primary in favor of an assembly process to nominate Republican candidates.
