Colorado is preparing to assist thousands of federal workers who may be laid off as a result of President Trump’s initiative to downsize the federal government with the Department of Government Efficiency. The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) is offering resources and programs for unemployed workers, including coaching, resume development, interview preparation, job fairs, hiring events, workshops, and training opportunities. The state is also encouraging federal workers to explore careers with the State of Colorado, highlighting employee benefits such as retirement benefits, medical and dental plans, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, and work-life programs.
Governor Jared Polis stated that Colorado is ready to support those impacted by federal job cuts and urged federal workers to consider joining the state workforce. Colorado currently has about 500 open positions, and Connecting Colorado, the state’s labor exchange, has approximately 60,000 job openings listed. Laid-off workers eligible for unemployment benefits may have to wait one week before their claim is activated and face restrictions if they continue to accept income, such as a buyout.
CDLE has set up a website with resources specifically for affected federal workers, providing information on how to file for unemployment and access the reemployment support system. The state is prepared to assist federal workers in navigating potential joblessness and encourages them to consider opportunities within Colorado as they deal with the impact of government downsizing.
