Former Colorado House Majority Leader Eric Schmidt dies | Government


Former Colorado House Assistant Majority Leader Eric Schmidt passed away at his home in Lakewood on Jan. 26. A memorial service is scheduled for March 15 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cherry Hills Village. Schmidt, born in Newark, NJ in 1933, was the only member of his family born in the US after his family immigrated from Germany in 1928. He attended the University of Colorado and served in the Colorado House from 1968 to 1973, including as Assistant Majority Leader. Following his time in the House, Schmidt was elected to the CU Board of Regents and later served as Vice Chancellor for External Health Affairs at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He retired in 1991 as Vice Chancellor and Regent Emeritus and went on to work as a consultant and Foundation Officer to the University of Colorado Foundation. Schmidt was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as Counselor to the Under Secretary and Deputy Director of the Division of Health Policy at the United States Department of Health and Human Services. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to various scholarship funds. Schmidt’s impactful career in public service and education will be remembered by all who knew him.
