Boulder County Democratic Vacancy Committee to Choose Replacement for Former Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis
A Boulder County Democratic vacancy committee is set to convene on March 18 to select a successor to former Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis, who resigned after submitting a fabricated letter of support. Ten candidates have announced their intention to seek the seat, including Katie Wallace, currently executive director of the Colorado Democratic Senate Campaign Fund, and Andrew Barton, program manager for Colorado Common Cause.
Wallace is endorsed by Rep. Karen McCormick, Sen. Judy Amabile, and Rep. Kyle Brown. Barton has the support of Sen. Janice Marchman. The Colorado Democratic Party lists eight other candidates, including former Erie mayor Justin Brooks and Longmont City Council member Shiquita Yarbrough.
The vacancy committee’s selection will mark the 21st lawmaker chosen through a vacancy election in the current General Assembly. The incoming SD17 winner will be the fourth state senator and fifth lawmaker in 2025 to secure a seat through the vacancy process. This decision comes after Jaquez Lewis’ resignation following a Senate ethics investigation into allegations of mistreatment of aides and interns.
