Longtime anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News,” Lester Holt, announced he will be stepping away from the broadcast at the beginning of the summer after 10 years of anchoring the show. Holt, who is 65, will continue as the full-time anchor of the news magazine show “Dateline.” The network has not yet named a replacement for Holt on “NBC Nightly News.”
Holt, who joined NBC News in 2000 and became anchor of “Nightly News” in 2015, expressed gratitude for his career in a memo to staff, reflecting on his humble beginnings as a 20-year-old radio reporter. Janelle Rodriguez, the executive vice president of programming at NBC News, praised Holt’s “steady and thoughtful leadership” during his time on “Nightly News,” emphasizing his role in maintaining the broadcast’s reputation as a trusted news source.
Holt’s departure is the latest in a series of high-profile exits in TV news, following Norah O’Donnell’s departure from “CBS Evening News” in January. As Holt prepares to step away from the anchor desk, the network will need to find a suitable replacement to continue the success and legacy he has built during his tenure as the face of “NBC Nightly News.”
