The Colorado Rockies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-3 in a spring training game at Salt River Fields on Saturday. Right-hander Gabriel Hughes, who missed last season due to Tommy John surgery, pitched two strong innings, impressing manager Bud Black with his fastball and command. The Rockies’ pitchers held the Diamondbacks to just three hits in total.
At the plate, first baseman Michael Toglia hit a three-run homer, while prospect Zac Veen hit a two-run homer and stole a base. Utility infielder Owen Miller had a solid game, going 2 for 2 with an RBI. Outfield prospect Cole Carrig also had a good game, hitting 1 for 2 with a two-run double.
Looking ahead, the Rockies will have split-squad games against the Oakland Athletics and Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. The probable pitchers for the Rockies against the Athletics are RHP Jake Woodford, RHP Jeff Criswell, RHP Jake Bird, RHP Seth Halvorsen, and RHP Jaden Hill. Against the Brewers, the probable pitchers are LHP Kyle Freeland, RHP Antonio Senzatela, RHP Tyler Kinley, RHP Victor Vodnik, RHP Justin Lawrence, and LHP Luis Peralta.
