Colorado Republicans Protest Resolution in Response to Jan. 6 Riots | Government

State House Republicans spent hours on Friday fighting against a joint resolution condemning the January 6 “insurrectionists” and President Donald President Trump’s pardons. The resolution highlighted the violence and threats posed to Vice President Mike Pence during the Capitol riot. Polls showed a majority of Americans believed Trump should not have pardoned those involved in the insurrection. Representative Michael Carter emphasized the racial double standard in the response to the riot if the mob had been Black. He stated that the attack on the Capitol was an assault on democracy and the right to vote. House Republicans offered numerous amendments to the resolution, including one to send it to Trump directly and another to change the language from “insurrectionists” to “participants,” citing prejudice. Despite the efforts from Republicans to delay passing the resolution, it was ultimately approved by a vote of 41 to 23, with one Democrat voting against it. Friday’s agenda also included a debate on House Bill 1133, which aimed to prohibit the sale of ammunition to those under 21. This resolution and debate highlighted the ongoing political divisions and efforts to address the events of January 6 and gun control legislation.
