President Donald Trump has signed an executive order barring transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports in the US. The order threatens federal funding for educational institutions that allow trans individuals to participate in female sports and use female locker rooms. Trump stated that the administration will investigate violations of Title IX, which bars sex discrimination in education, in schools allowing trans athletes.
The order aims to end what Trump called the “war on women’s sports” and promote sex-based female sports categories nationally and internationally. The President also plans to urge the International Olympic Committee to enforce sex-based participation before the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
The issue of trans women’s participation in sports has drawn controversy, with public opinion polls showing growing opposition. The NCAA welcomed Trump’s order for setting a national standard, aiming for consistent eligibility standards for student-athletes. LGBTQ advocacy groups, such as Athlete Ally and GLADD, criticized the order, expressing sadness for trans youth and condemning what they saw as an attack on marginalized communities.
Despite Trump’s executive order, advocacy groups continue to advocate for the inclusion of all individuals, including transgender individuals, in sports and other aspects of society. The Trump administration has signed multiple executive orders targeting trans individuals since taking office, sparking debate and controversy over their impact on the LGBTQ community.
