Man found guilty of killing activist Ma Kaing in first-degree murder trial

Lu Reh, one of the suspects charged in the shooting death of community activist Ma Kaing in 2022, was convicted of first-degree murder by a Denver jury. Kaing, a mother of four and a community activist, was killed when she was struck by a stray bullet while unloading a vehicle at her apartment in Aurora. The shooting occurred as suspects exchanged gunfire at a nearby park, with each suspect armed and shooting at a passing vehicle.

The incident was believed to be gang-related, and four suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting. Lu Reh, along with Nu La and Swa Bay, were charged with multiple counts, including first-degree murder. However, Nu La and Swa Bay later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea deal. The case against Pa Reh is still ongoing.

Following the shooting, Kaing’s son, Kyaw Lwin “John” Oo, criticized the response from 911 operators, claiming they hung up during various calls. Despite the tragic outcome, Kaing’s family called for changes in their East Colfax neighborhood to prevent similar incidents.

The conviction of Lu Reh for first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted murder brings a sense of closure to the case, while highlighting the need for increased community safety and intervention to prevent further violence. The tragic death of Ma Kaing serves as a reminder of the impact of gang-related crimes on innocent individuals and families, prompting calls for change and accountability in the community.
