Bill allowing voluntary gun waiver passes Colorado Senate committee

Senate Bill 34, a proposal that would allow individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts to voluntarily prohibit themselves from purchasing firearms, has advanced in the Senate. Sponsored by Sen. Cathy Kipp and Rep. Andrew Boesenecker, the bill would allow individuals to sign a waiver authorizing the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to temporarily prevent them from buying a gun for 30 days. Those who attempt to purchase a firearm while the waiver is active may face a $25 fine.

Although some are skeptical about the bill’s effectiveness in reducing suicide rates, supporters argue that it provides an additional layer of protection, particularly for individuals who don’t already own a gun but may be considering purchasing one to commit suicide. The bill aims to address the high number of firearms-related suicides in Colorado, with 70% of firearms deaths in the state being attributed to suicide.

While some opponents argue that the focus should be on mental health support rather than restricting Second Amendment rights, supporters emphasize the importance of providing individuals with a way to temporarily remove access to firearms during periods of heightened mental health risk. The bill has passed its first hurdle in the Senate, with a party-line vote of 3-2.
