U.S. Rep. Jason Crow announced on Monday that Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora will not be used to process and house detained immigrants, despite previous statements from the military’s U.S. Northern Command. This revelation contradicted earlier plans for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to utilize the base for such purposes, sparking concerns from the Aurora community.
During a visit to the base, Crow stated that Buckley will instead serve as a staging location for law enforcement and a coordination center for ongoing operations. This shift in plans may reflect a change in direction by the Trump administration. The Congressmen emphasized the importance of transparency and oversight regarding federal law enforcement activities at the base.
In response to the potential threat posed to Aurora’s immigrant community, organizations like the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition and the Colorado Rapid Response Network are working to inform and protect residents. Crow highlighted the distinction between apprehending violent criminals and conducting mass deportations, expressing concern for the impact on families and businesses in the area.
Following reports of ICE raids in Aurora and the arrest of undocumented immigrants in Adams County, Crow reiterated his commitment to monitoring the situation at Buckley. He emphasized the need for ongoing vigilance and oversight to ensure that the base is not used for activities that could detract from its core national security missions or harm the community. By staying informed and engaged, residents can be prepared for potential enforcement actions and protect themselves and their loved ones.
