Lawmakers in Colorado plan to introduce new abortion legislation protecting providers

Colorado lawmakers are set to introduce two bills that would enhance state laws regarding abortion access this week, in response to concerns about potential federal actions and threats to reproductive health care. The first bill aims to protect abortion providers who offer care to individuals in states where abortion is restricted. The second bill proposes incorporating federal emergency abortion protections into Colorado state law.

The bills are being introduced amidst increased challenges to abortion access at the federal level and in other states. The proposed legislation is supported by abortion-rights advocates who view it as a critical step in safeguarding reproductive rights as the national landscape grows increasingly hostile.

The bills are likely to face opposition from Republicans in the state legislature, but are backed by Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate. Rep. Megan Froelich, a sponsor of one of the bills, emphasized the importance of ensuring emergency health care access for pregnant individuals, especially in light of restrictive laws in other states.

Sen. Lisa Cutter, who will carry one of the bills, highlighted the need to protect providers caring for out-of-state patients, particularly in cases involving online prescriptions. The proposed legislation builds on previous measures to shield providers and patients in Colorado from enforcement of out-of-state laws criminalizing abortion.

Advocates stress the importance of upholding abortion rights in Colorado, with recent voter approval of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing access to abortion. Despite challenges at the national and state levels, proponents emphasize the need to ensure access to reproductive health care for all Coloradans.
