Hopeful Colorado Dog Owners and Veterinarians Look to New Drug to Prolong Pets’ Lives

A clinical trial for a drug that could extend the lifespan of dogs is currently underway in Colorado, offering hope to pet owners and veterinarians. The drug aims to address metabolic inefficiencies that can impact a dog’s longevity, particularly in large breed dogs. Goodheart Animal Health Center is one of the clinics participating in the study, with local pet owners like Jenna Dockweiler eager to see if the drug can provide more time with their beloved companions.

One such participant in the study is Mason, a 12-year-old Springer Spaniel who is enjoying retirement with Dockweiler and her partner. Mason, a former agility and obedience competitor, is now part of the STAY clinical study being conducted by Loyal, a biochemical company based in San Francisco. The double-blind placebo study involves daily medication for up to four years to assess the drug’s effectiveness.

While the extent of the drug’s impact on a dog’s lifespan is yet to be determined, participants like Dockweiler are hopeful for positive results. The possibility of conditional FDA approval by the end of the year could pave the way for more dogs to benefit from the drug in the future. Overall, the trial represents an opportunity to extend both the quality and quantity of dogs’ lives, offering hope to pet owners and their furry companions.
