Group aiming to repeal Colorado’s ‘sanctuary laws’ targeted in new campaign | News

A group known as Advance Colorado is proposing the repeal of Colorado’s “sanctuary statutes” which limit cooperation with federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws. The proposal would require state and local law enforcers to work with federal agencies on immigration enforcement, specifically by notifying Homeland Security about releasing inmates and detaining those charged with violent crimes or previous felonies. Advance Colorado President Michael Fields has called for lawmakers to also pass a set of proposals to mandate cooperation with federal authorities and repeal sanctuary laws.

Governor Polis has shown a willingness to work with federal authorities on immigration issues, while also pushing for an increase in immigration and FBI agents in Colorado. The state has been under scrutiny for its sanctuary laws, which prevent local law enforcement from complying with federal immigration detainers and sharing personal information with immigration authorities unless compelled by courts. A recent court challenge targeting these laws was dismissed, with plans to appeal.

Colorado has seen an influx of immigrants, with a recent case involving a Venezuelan gang targeting immigrants in Aurora. The surge in immigrants has cost the city millions, leading to concerns about safety and finances. Governor Polis signed a bill allocating funds to schools handling new immigrant students. The issue of sanctuary laws in Colorado continues to be a point of contention, with Advance Colorado and others pushing for stricter enforcement.
