Syrian authorities detain former Assad-era officer linked to start of 2011 uprising | Global News

Syrian authorities have arrested Atef Najib, a former senior security officer and cousin of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad, who is credited with sparking the country’s 2011 uprising. Najib, a brigadier general and former head of the Political Security Department in Daraa, was arrested by General Security forces in Latakia province. This arrest is part of the authorities’ efforts to hold accountable those involved in violations against the Syrian people and enhance security and stability in the region. Najib’s arrest comes after Islamist rebels seized power last year and have pledged to arrest members of the former government accused of crimes. The arrest and torture of Syrian boys in Daraa, where Najib was security chief, sparked protests that eventually ignited a nationwide uprising. Najib was previously sanctioned by the U.S. in 2011 for alleged human rights abuses. He has now been handed over to face trial. This development is seen as a significant move towards seeking justice for past crimes committed during the Assad era.
